Meet Laurel: Our latest star in English copywriting.
Welcome to KAN! First things first, how was your first day – was it a whirlwind of meetings and information overload, or did you manage to catch your breath a little?
How better to start my first day at KAN than with the peppy Monday morning breakfast huddle? I felt warmly welcomed and the onboarding info was concise and relevant. There was a comfortable balance between all the new information and space to process it, with friendly help close at hand when questions came up. A nice lunch with my KANrat Malin and time to get to know some of my new colleagues softened the culture shock of being salaried again after flying solo for so long!
As a native English copywriter, what is the most unusual Swedish phrase you have come across so far, and how would you translate it into English?
Oh, there are so many. The absurd rumphuggen is a favourite and I’d probably translate it as “rough-hewn”, “stunted” or “underdeveloped” in a text. But then we would miss out on the awesome imagery of the literal ass/chop (as in: “Did you make that with an ax, with your ass?”). So, a better choice might be, “half-assed” to capture that, though it’s still not a perfect match.
What’s your go-to drink when you sit down to write a hefty piece of text – coffee, tea, or something completely different?
I’ll hide away with a latte (and a pain au chocolat) from Bagaren & Bonden if I’m in town. At home, it’s a green smoothie with apples and kale from the garden or dark, salty homemade hot chocolate that will see me through.
If you had to describe your writing style as a movie genre, which one would it be – are you more of a ‘romcom’ or a ‘spy thriller’
I’ll go with “documentaryfeel-good” – authentic back stories to give context and elicit empathy, and uplifting ideas to delight and empower real people.
What attracted you the most to join KAN, and how do you look forward to contributing to the team’s creative projects?
The deciding factors were the chance to work more with my long-time favourite client, Tetra Pak, reunite with favourite former collaborators, and enjoy the security and fun of being part of a successful team.
If you could take a character from any book or movie and make them a KAN team member, who would it be and why?
Give me the magical Mary Poppins. With a little song and dance, creativity and positive irreverence, she turns every boring day into an adventure and every job into a game.
